4 vs 6 vs 8 Passengers: Picking the Right Cart Size in Port Aransas
Why cart size matters in Port Aransas
Port Aransas is a small beach town at the north end of Mustang Island, and a golf cart is a popular way to get around it. Most of your trips will be short: the beach, the harbor, the shops on Alister Street, a park or the grocery store. The cart size you pick decides how comfortable those trips are, how much gear you can carry, and how easy it is to find a space when you get there.
Carts are usually offered as 4-passenger, 6-passenger and 8-passenger models. Here is how to choose between them.
4-passenger carts: compact and easy
Who they suit
- Couples
- Small families of three or four
- Groups that travel light and make lots of short stops
Advantages
- Easier to park. A smaller cart fits more spaces near the beach, the harbor and in town, which matters on busy weekends.
- Easier to handle. Tight turns and crowded streets are less work in a shorter cart.
- Usually the lowest cost. Smaller carts are generally less expensive to rent than larger ones.
Limitations
- Limited cargo space. With all four seats full, there is not much room for chairs, an umbrella and a cooler. Some models have a rear seat that flips into a cargo bed, which helps when you are not using it for passengers.
- No spare seats. If friends join you for dinner or you pick someone up, there is no room.
A 4-seater works well if you are staying close to the beach and mainly need short hops to the sand, a restaurant or the store.
6-passenger carts: the practical middle
Who they suit
- Families with kids, grandparents or extra guests
- Groups of four to six friends
- Anyone bringing beach gear, coolers or fishing tackle
Advantages
- Room for people and gear. Even with four riders, the extra seats give you space for chairs, towels and a cooler.
- Flexibility. If plans change and someone joins you, there is a seat for them.
- Still manageable. A 6-seater is longer than a 4-seater but most drivers get used to it quickly.
Limitations
- Harder to park at busy times. During SandFest in April, holiday weekends and peak summer days, spaces near the beach and in town are in demand, and a longer cart has fewer options.
- Wider turns. Narrow streets and crowded corners take a little more care.
For many families, a 6-passenger cart is the size that causes the fewest compromises.
8-passenger carts: for big groups
Who they suit
- Large families or groups of six to eight
- Two families sharing one cart
- Groups with lots of gear for full beach days
Advantages
- Everyone rides together. No splitting up or arranging to meet at the beach.
- Plenty of space. When not every seat is filled, the extra seats double as storage for tents, chairs and coolers.
Limitations
- Parking takes planning. The longest carts fit fewer spaces, especially in busy areas on summer weekends.
- Less nimble. Turning around or squeezing through traffic takes more patience.
- Fewer available. Operators usually have fewer 8-seaters than smaller carts, so they book out sooner.
How to choose: five questions
1. How many people ride most days?
Count the people who will ride most of the time, not the most you might ever carry. Every rider needs a real seat. If your group changes from day to day, lean toward the larger size.
2. How much gear will you carry?
Beach days in Port A tend to involve chairs, umbrellas, coolers, buckets and sometimes fishing rods. If you plan full days on the sand or fishing from Horace Caldwell Pier, extra space helps.
3. Where are you staying?
If your rental is a short walk from the beach, a smaller cart may be all you need. If you are farther from the places you want to go, the comfort of a larger cart adds up over a week of trips.
4. What does a typical day look like?
Quick runs between your rental and the beach suit a 4-seater. Multi-stop days with the whole group, such as birding in the morning, the beach in the afternoon and dinner in town, suit a 6- or 8-seater.
5. When are you visiting?
Spring break, summer, holiday weekends and SandFest are the busiest times. Larger carts are in high demand then, so book early if you need one.
Sample days by group size
Couples or small families (2 to 4 people)
Start the morning at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, spend the afternoon on the beach near the end of Cotter Avenue, then head to Alister Street for dinner. A 4-passenger cart handles this easily.
Families or friend groups (5 to 6 people)
Watch for dolphins near the harbor and Roberts Point Park, take a picnic to the beach in the afternoon, then ride back into town for ice cream. A 6-passenger cart carries everyone plus the cooler and chairs.
Large groups (7 to 8 people)
Load up chairs, a shade tent and coolers for a long beach day, then take a walk at the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie's Pasture before dinner. An 8-passenger cart keeps everyone together.
One big cart or two small ones?
For groups of seven or eight, an 8-passenger cart keeps everyone together and means one booking, one charge or fill-up and one parking space. Two smaller carts give you flexibility if the group often splits up, for example when some people want to fish while others head to the shops. Think about how your group actually spends its days before deciding.
Local tips for a smooth trip
- Book early for busy weeks. Larger carts go first during spring break, summer and SandFest.
- Ask about cart parking at your rental. Find out where the cart can be kept at your house or condo, and whether there is an outlet for charging an electric cart.
- Ask about features. Enclosures, flip-down rear seats and speakers vary by cart and operator.
- Leave a seat or two spare. Extra room makes a difference when you add a guest or more gear.
- Check the local rules before you go. Where carts can be ridden and parked can vary, so check before you set out or ask the operator. Our Port Aransas golf cart rental guide covers the basics.
The short version
Pick a 4-passenger cart for couples and small families who travel light, a 6-passenger cart for most families and groups with beach gear, and an 8-passenger cart when a large group wants to ride together. Count your riders, think about your gear and book early in busy seasons. You can compare available sizes on our Port Aransas golf cart rentals page.
