Driving in Key West
- Key West rental carts are street-legal low-speed vehicles (LSVs): titled, registered and insured, and allowed only on streets posted 35 mph or less (Fla. Stat. § 316.2122). Nearly every city street qualifies, including Duval Street.
- A valid driver's license is required by law. Most Key West operators set their own minimum driver age of 21 to 25 — check the operator's terms.
- Seat belts are required for every rider, and DUI laws apply exactly as they do in a car.
- Stay on the island: carts are not permitted on US-1 / the Overseas Highway or on any bridge out of Key West. Some operators allow Stock Island; others end at the island line — confirm before you book.
- No sidewalks or bike paths. Park in standard car spaces; most of Old Town is metered or paid parking.
